I’ve told you all my secrets for keeping carpet clean. Now it’s time to talk about hardwood. People love it because of its elegant look and durability, but how do you keep it looking beautiful year after year? There are many ways to clean and protect hardwood floors and I’d like to share my best advice.
Here are 5 ways to clean and protect hardwood floors:
Sweep daily. Keeping wood floors beautiful always starts with regular sweeping. This not only eliminates dust and dirt, which causes the floors to look dingy, it will also remove any heavier debris that has been tracked in. Heavier debris can easily scratch floors and it’s important to get rid of it. If you have the availability, I recommend sweeping your floors each day for best results.
Dust mop often. In addition to sweeping regularly, I recommend using a dust mop too. A dust mop can be purchased at any hardware store and can be used for both hardwood and tile or linoleum. Dust mop your floors once a week or as often as you can manage. This will pick up all of the tiny dust and dirt particles that you can’t get with a broom.
Deep clean regularly. Now that you’ve swept and dusted your floors, it’s time for a deep clean. I recommend doing this each month to keep your floors shiny and looking new. To deep clean your hardwood floors, you’ll want to apply a safe wood cleaner that isn’t abrasive. I have used distilled vinegar and water for years, and it’s always works well. It’s all natural too!
Now that the cleaning is all done, I’d like to talk a little about how to protect hardwood floors.
Lose the shoes. I recommended taking your shoes off when you enter your home and asking guests to do the same. If you ask nicely, most people won’t mind the request. This will go a long way for keeping both carpet and hardwood floors looking their best.
Be proactive. Hardwood floors are tough, but they’re not invincible. You should take precautions so you don’t have to worry about costly repairs due to scratches or stains. I like to put gliders or protectors on furniture like dining room chairs to keep the legs from leaving marks. You can also do this for larger items like sofas and TV stands. For high traffic areas like near a dog door, add a rug or mat to protect it.
All in all, hardwood floors are very easy to keep clean and in good shape. I hope this guide has been helpful and that you’ll use it in your home. If you have any tips for keeping hardwood floors looking great, please share in the comments below!
